How to size a motorcycle helmet

  1. Measure: Use a flexible tape measure. Wrap it around the largest part of your head (usually about 1 inch above the eyebrow)
  2. Check Sizing Chart: Most helmets on MxMegastore have size charts. Just click the button "View Size Chart" by the size selection on each helmets page. Match up your measurement with the size chart and find your size. For example, using the chart below, if your measurement is 23.5 inches or just about 60cm you would choose a size Large.
  3. Try one on: The best way to find your size is to try it on but just because you wear a size Large in one brand doesn't necessarily mean you wear a Large in another brand. If you are trying one on to order a different helmet online make sure you are trying on the same brand or at least one with the same size chart.
  4. Shake your head and make sure it's not too big: With the helmet on shake your head side to side and up and down. If the helmet moves freely, separate from your head then the helmet is too big. The skin on your head should move with the helmet. The helmet should not shift on its own.
  5. Make sure it's not too tight: A new helmet should feel a little snug when you first put it on but not hurt. The helmet liner will relax about a half a size the first few times it is worn. If your head hurts because the helmet is to tight then you definitely need to go up a size. After the helmet has passed the shake test you should still be able to put a finger comfortable inside the front of the helmet between the liner and your forehead. You should be able to wear the helmet comfortablely all day.

A quality proper fitting helmet is easily the most critical investment in safety weather you’re on the dirt or street. By spending $600 on a motorcycle helmet that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a more safe helmet. As long as a helmet has a DOT or Snell rating it will protect you melon just fine. By spending several hundred dollars on a helmet you can protect yourself in comfort and style. Most helmets in the sub $200 range are made of an injection molded polycarbonate shell. A polycarbonate shell does a good job at protecting you in a crash but it is a little heavier than more expensive helmets made of Kevlar and Carbon Fiber.

Carbon Fiber and Kevlar helmets have roughly the same strength of a polycarbonate but in a much lighter frame. If you spend a lot of time on the bike and notice that you neck gets a little soar on long rides it may be time to step up to a carbon fiber or Kevlar lid.

Below is an example of a typical size chart on MxMegastore. Sizes vary a little bit from manufacturer to manufacturer. The chart below is for Icon helmets.
